“Theatre is a sort of moral conscience of a society, an arena where a society can examine itself and if some voices are missing then theatre is in effect practising a subtle form of censorship” – Winsome Pinnock
Often missing in theatre are the voices of black women. The 'Ain't I A Woman?' (AIAW) Initiative uses theatre to promote black women. By providing a platform for their experiences, stories and voices, the AIAW Initiative aims to empower and inspire the black female, female identifying, trans and afab non-binary communities in the UK.
Conceived by theatre fanatic Landé Belo in January 2023, the AIAW Initiative has supported productions staged at the Tower Theatre in Stoke Newington, London, UK.
On 4 Nov 2024, Landé was recognised with a prestigious Best Producer 2024 Black British Theatre Award!
Missed the award-winning 'Ain't I A Woman'? production the first time round? Don't worry - it's back as part of the Collective Fringe Festival, 23 - 25 Jan 2025!
